ESSMA Stadium Partner SGL organised its 12th Masterclass on 20 - 21 March 2018 in Italy with visits to Allianz Stadium (Turin) and Milanello Sport Center (Milan) on day one and San Siro (Milan) on the second day. This customer only event focused on research and design. With 80 attendees, it was the highest attendance in SGL Masterclass’ history.

Day one

The first day was kicked off by Frank van Beusekom, Sales Director SGL, revealing the latest SGL developments such as future research and test centre plans.

Speakers on day one of the SGL Masterclass:

  • Sylvain Duval, a turfgrass agronomist from France, stressed the urgency for a biological solution against turfgrass fungal diseases. He clarified his field and laboratory study, evaluating the performance of SGL’s UVC180 on pathogen control on golf course putting greens.
  • Francesco Gianello, Head of Allianz Stadium, explained venue usage and the main challenges involved. The pitch at Allianz Stadium is 12 metres below ground level which makes it a difficult grass growing environment.
  • Dr. Kate Entwistle, a turfgrass disease specialist, demonstrated fungi and turf samples and how grass’ scent can help identify diseases. Moreover, she specified the common diseases on football pitches.
  • Xavi Tordera, former FC Barcelona Head Groundsman and currently consultant to FIFA and Area Manager at SGL, focused on extreme weather situations.

Day two

SGL’s R&D Manager Kristel Meijer opened with a Q&A on the product development process; the different steps when developing a new product, the challenges SGL faces and how customer feedback is implemented in the R&D process.

In addition, in-house agronomists Mark Wubben and Gerard van ‘t Klooster explained the latest developments in the advisory tool - SGL ASSIST - and which new features to find on the SGL Portal 24/7 monitoring tool in the near future.

Results from latest stadium tests, the different challenges the company faces and choices they make in regard to the research and development of LED lighting units was brought by SGL agronomist Glenn van der Burg.

If you did not have the opportunity to attend this year’s Masterclass, SGL and ESSMA would like to invite you for a behind the scenes visit to the SGL headquarters on day 2 of the ESSMA Pitch Management Workshop.
