Krestovsky Stadium will be one of the host venues for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. One of the challenges the 68,000 capacity stadium is facing, is the significant increase in stewards and how to keep them motivated.

Can you explain the transition regarding stewarding from the old Petrovsky Stadium to the new Krestovsky Stadium?

Significant changes to the old system were made because of the scale of the new venue and new challenges which arose; the extra amount of stewards, the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup, etc. We created a staff preparations centre and re-organised the stewarding department. We hired more permanent staff and trained stewards according to a new stewarding programme. There are 1,500 trained stewards in the new Krestovsky Stadium.

At the old Petrovsky Stadium, there were less than 300 trained stewards.

What will be the biggest challenges for FC Zenit to keep stewards at the club after the FIFA World Cup 2018?

From the beginning of next year, we will provide stewards with a motivation programme in which they will receive extra points for loyalty, the quality of their work and whenever they perform well. We organise quality control services during matches to analyse how the stewards perform.

Why is it important to incorporate a motivation programme?

Since it’s not their main job, it is important to motivate the temporary staff and keep them with us. There is a cost associated with training the temporary staff so motivation is important to retain them. The motivation programme is divided in 1. paying money and 2. bonuses: meeting the first team, bringing their parents to the game, receiving extra tickets, etc.
