60th anniversary of Camp Nou

By September 26, 2017

On the 24th of September the Camp Nou stadium of FC Barcelona turned 60. In 1957 the first home game in Camp Nou was played in the unfinished stadium with over 90,000 fans present. Since then Camp Nou, an ESSMA Stadium Member, has been the site of FC Barcelona’s significant success including 18 Primera Division titles, 16 Copas Del Rey and 5 Champions League and European Cup wins.

The club has been home to some of the greatest names in football such as Xavi, Iniesta, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Messi and Cruijff

While Camp Nou starts its 7th decade, FC Barcelona is preparing a process of major redevelopment. The new Camp Nou, which is a part of the Espai Barça project, will be able to host around 105 000 supporters. Moreover, the Estadi Johan Cruijff, part of the project as well, will be the new stadium for the youth and women football team of FC Barcelona.

“The Camp Nou is and will continue to be our home where all blaugranas have a special memory, where we have lived moments of glory and sadness, where our coaches and players have written sporting history.”

Josep Maria Bartomeu, chairman of FC Barcelona

The Espai Barça project consists of different operations:

  • Construction of the new Camp Nou
  • Construction of the New Palau Blaugrana with 12,500 seats on the site of the current Miniestadi
  • Moving from the Miniestadi to the Estadi Johan Cruijff (6,000 seats) at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper
  • Development of club activities where the current Palau Blaugrana is located, including the offices, FC Botiga, Tour Experience, dining options, Espai Barça, etc.
  • Improved accessibility and parking
  • Integration of the Campus to the Les Corts neighbourhood
  • Creation of open areas and public pathways which integrate the club’s activities with the city
