ESSMA will organize its first event of 2017 in Leicester, at the King Power Stadium and LCFC training center. Jonathan Calderwood, together with John Ledwidge and his team, will welcome us for the Pitch Workshop on 10-11 May.

Jonathan Calderwood, a keynote speaker for ESSMA’s 2017 Pitch Workshop in Leicester, holds the position of Head Grounds Manager at Paris Saint-Germain and is also member of the ESSMA Advisory Committee.

He confesses that the game has changed. The pitch has to be in perfect condition to meet the players’ needs and to diminish the risk of potential injuries.

“The original role of the groundsman and his team was to deliver pitches that ‘looked good’, the modern game, with its hi-tech, multi-million-pound players demand specific pitch types that deliver the best playability for the way the players’ want to play the game and all with the risk of potential injury diminished. The pressure is on to deliver good-looking pitches that are not only camera-ready for the broadcasters but that also deliver on the players’ requirements in terms of performance, presentation and diminished risks of injury.”

The ESSMA 2017 Pitch Workshop is a perfect opportunity to gain insights into this matter. A practical session about player injury management will be provided by Lee Jackson, Head Groundsman at Manchester City.

Stressing out the importance of pitch management, he saw that other French teams are now realising what the job of a grounds manager involves and what this means for pitch maintenance.

“UEFA EURO ’16 was the catalyst that demanded pitch standards were put at the forefront and my arrival in France has also changed people’s perceptions as to what a Grounds Manager actually does, and made them see how important having the best possible pitch is. Other French teams are now realising that they have to ‘up their game’, with new pitches, lighting rigs, better budgets, and there is definitely a new-found respect for the job people like me and our grounds staff do.”

Jonathan reckons that sharing knowledge about pitch management on ESSMA events brings the industry to a higher level.

“ESSMA’s Pitch Management Workshop is a perfect platform for all European grounds managers to come together to share the ideas and share the knowledge. The pitch has become a very important part of the stadium and ESSMA is building up the awareness of the grounds manager’s role and the whole industry.”
